Learn theory and techniques of Pit Fired ceramics with organic and recycled items. Instructor Sam Robinson shares her expertise in Pit Firing using found items and natural materials in the process.

$75.00 Tuition Includes:

  • 6 pounds of clay
  • instruction in constructing the pit and creating appropriate pieces for pit firing
  • participation in construction of the pit
  • ride sharing between Hilo and the pit site on 2/13

Create piece at High Fire Hawaii Gallery in Hilo. Instruction covers handbuilding techniques and methods of producing pieces suitable for achieving the best results in a pit fire.

March 13, 2010 — 9:00am — 4:00pmPit Fire

Meet at our High Fire Hawaii Studio @ 9:00am and travel to the pit site near Pepe’ekeo. Location and construction of the pit, placement of pieces, firing materials, stoking and firing to achieve the best results will be demonstrated and discussed.

March 14, 2010 — 2:00pm — 3:00pmOpening the Pit

This part is optional but encouraged. The fired pieces are removed from the pit to be shared and admired. If you can’t attend the opening you may pick up your pieces after Monday at High Fire Hawaii in Hilo.
