Pit Fire & Raku Workshop

Saturday, July 07, 2018 from : 10:00am -1:00pm
At High Fire Hawaii in Hilo. Introduction to the Raku & Pit Firing techniques. The first session will present an opportunity to design and create up to 4 pieces (2 for Raku & 2 for the Pit) that will be appropriate for Raku & Pit Firings (no tableware please). We will cover theory, techniques and methods of producing pieces suitable for achieving the best results for raku & pit fired items.
Instructor Sam Robinson shares her expertise in pit firing using organic, found / recycled items and natural materials in the process.
*Saturday, July 07, 2018 from 2:00pm – 3:30pm optional open studio. An opportunity to trim or burnish your piece if needed. After a lunch break you are invited back to hang out with Sam and learn to burnish or add more textures to your piece.
Saturday, July 14, 2018 – From: 10:00am – pau – probably around 1:30pm – Site near Pepeekeo. (Directions and or car pooling will be arranged in first class)
In the second session students will glaze their pieces and observe the loading and firing of the Raku Kiln. When the pieces areremoved from the Raku kiln, several optional post reduction finishing techniques will be discussed and applied. Raku finished pieces can be taken home at the end of this second session.
Students will also prepare pieces for pit firing at the pit site and participate in the placement of their pieces. The preparing of firing materials, stoking and firing the pit to achieve the best results will be demonstrated.
Sunday, July 15 – Time - TBA Opening the Pit. This session is optional but encouraged. The fired pieces are removed from the pit to be shared and admired. If you can’t attend the pit opening you may pick up your pieces after Tuesday, July 17, 2018, at High Fire Hawaii Gallery & Studio in Hilo.
